"Data Miners Team"

The Data Mining Team from Tropic Isles Elementary School of North Fort Myers measures student progress based primarily on results from the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). In order for the school to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), students must show annual increases in student achievement, regardless of social or economic conditions. The challenge was that the Lee County and Fort Myers area is second only to Las Vegas, Nevada in terms of the impact of the mortgage disaster and increases in home foreclosures. This directly impacts the percentage of students eligible for free and reduced lunches at the school (from 62% in 2006 to 83% in 2010).

The correlation between a child’s academic performance and socio-economic status is well documented. The team used a systematic approach to evaluate every aspect of the school’s performance and to evaluate and prioritize opportunities for improvement. As a result of the team’s effort, the school continued to meet or exceed state FCAT performance requirements in school years 2006/2007 to 2009/2010. For example, performance requirements for Grade 3 Math increased from 81% to 94.9%, Grade 4 Math increased from 69% to 88.3%, Grade 3 Reading increased from 74% to 89.7%, and Grade 4 Reading increased from 61% to 86%. Those results all exceed the 90th percentile in 2009/2010.
