Through our annual strategic planning process, Imperial Point Medical Center identified an opportunity to increase Emergency Department (ED) market share while also enhancing the patient’s experience. From 2003-2005, Imperial Point increased its market share by only 1%, while a primary competitor’s market share increased by 4%. It was determined that 90% of our hospital admissions originate from the ED, making it the "front door" to the hospital and the first impression of Imperial Point Medical Center by our customers and their families.
The existing ED also had a number of weaknesses which impacted the delivery of care. An interdisciplinary team was chartered representative of stakeholders inside and outside of the hospital, with the goals to build an ED that would better service the community while striving to be the regional leader in emergency services, improve the image to the "front door" of the hospital, and increase the ED market share and profitability.
Results included: Exceeding expected year one growth volume, projections called for 1000 more visits, cared for 2,350 new visits; exceeding net revenue goal of $1.4 million to almost $2.5 million; market share increased by 9%; Key ED wait times improved such as arrival to triage improved by 92% from 25 minutes to 2 minutes and; an increase in customer satisfaction noted – "would recommend ED services" increased by 11%.
