The Supplier Managed Inventory Team, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, Ocala Operations has had significant results with its improvements. The complex systems designed, developed, assembled, and tested by Lockheed Martin typically have more than 1,000 distinct part numbers, resulting in approximately 7,800 purchase orders, 15,000 shipments received at the dock, and 23 million parts inventoried, warehoused, and issued to the manufacturing floor. By employing a systematic problem solving process including a PICK Chart and Value Stream Mapping the team streamlined the supply chain management process with their primary supplier, the Veterans Trading Company (VTC).
This resulted in reduced material cost savings, labor savings, reduced in-house inventory, and increased production capacity. A total cost savings of approximately $5 million, from June 2010 and projected through the life of the contract ending in 2012, has been achieved by the company and U.S. tax payers thanks to the team’s efforts.
