Manatee Plant Controllable Parameters Improvement Team developed an analytical approach to determine the relative health of the critical plant operating processes by utilizing Six Sigma tools and methods. Based on this process the team was able to shift capability from a defect per million opportunity of 215,863 to 4,534 -- a reduction in likelihood of a defect by 98%.
The impact of this improvement on customer valid requirements is significant assurance that various components will better achieve full life expectancy, as well as a cost avoidance of approximately $23 million for premature component replacement, and an efficiency increase equivalent to a cost avoidance of about $455,000 per year. Also, future plant availability should increase by an additional 140,000 operating hours once components are allowed to reach their full life expectancy.
