Region Six Baptist Hospital of Miami X-terminators Team

Baptist Hospital of Miami

Baptist Hospital of Miami, winner of the national Consumer Choice award for the past 5 years, presents “the X-Terminators.” The leadership of Baptist Hospital made a strategic decision to join the American College of Surgeons’ – National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. This is an innovative program committed to improving surgical patients’ outcomes (such as reducing surgical site infections).

Baptist Hospital’s leadership recognized that their surgical outcomes were comparable to the US national average, but made the decision to partner with NSQIP in January of 2008 to further improve patients’ surgical care. The Board and leaders strongly believe that surgical infections can be largely preventable, and that even one surgical infection or death related to a surgical complication is one too many.

A multidisciplinary team, led by surgeons, was chartered to address the reduction of surgical site infections. This team utilized quality tools such as brainstorming, root cause analysis, prioritization matrix, benchmarking and project planning. Data were analyzed using cause and effect diagrams, bar graphs, control charts, and candlestick charts. Evidence-based processes were initiated, executed, further analyzed using the PDSA model for improvement, and hardwired into daily practice.

Results achieved were a reduction in surgical site infections of 61.5%, an overall complication reduction of 52%, an estimated cost savings of $4 million dollars, and most importantly, lives were saved (deaths were decreased by 47.1%).

The team’s primary lesson learned was that striving for “Big Hairy Audacious Goals” can lead to greatness – Baptist Hospital’s patients deserve nothing less.

Region Six North Broward Medical Center Total Joint Replacement Program Team

North Broward Medical Center realized an opportunity to be recognized as a leader in total joint replacement care. The team of highly trained orthopedic surgeons and health care professionals used data and powerful process improvement tools to determine their current patient care path was fragmented and outcomes for patient satisfaction, length of stay in the hospital and surgical care were below industry benchmarks. With the redesign of core processes and incorporating the voice of the customer, they developed a world class joint replacement center. Project results show a marked increase: in surgical volumes from 26 to 54 per month; patient satisfaction based on a scale of one to ten showed that 48% of the patients rated the program a “9” or “10” before the project, now at 73%; discharges to home increased from 21% to 80%; a decrease in length of stay, for example knee replacements from 4.3 to 3.3 days; and a significant reduction in the risk for infection.

North Broward Medical Center is the first and only hospital in Broward County to receive certification from the Joint Commission for its joint replacement program demonstrating a commitment to quality health care and optimal clinical outcomes.
