“The Bureau of Braille and Talking Book Library Services Material Recording Team” from the Division of Blind Services, Daytona Beach, represents Region 3 at the Sterling Team Showcase in May. The Library provides 39,000 customers annually with products and services specially geared for readers with visual, physical or reading disabilities. Florida customers encompass 6% of the nation’s talking book library readership. Library recordings in the form of “talking books” are the integral part of our products and services that we provide to our customers. The Library currently records over 30 magazines and newsletters not available from other sources. These recordings are weekly, monthly, quarterly and produced on an ongoing basis.
The quality of products and services has been an important goal for the Library; in 2006 we implemented Six Sigma techniques to assist in determining areas for improvement. Our Project Selection Matrix assisted in creating the goal for improvements in our Library Recordings Production. By using outside Quality Assurance, we targeted three areas where improvements were most needed: Indexing Tones are Placed Correctly, Announcements Accurately Worded and Correctly Placed, and Recorded Volume Levels are Good.
After brainstorming, we developed countermeasures to drastically improve the quality of recorded products. Through re-training Staff Volunteers, adding a Quality Control Editing Checklist and Reference Manuals, and upgrading equipment and studios to current national standards, we have made an amazing 122% improvement in our quality indicators of recording products produced and provided to our customers.
