About Us: Overview

Established in 1992, the Florida Sterling Council is a public/private not-for-profit corporation supported by the Executive Office of the Governor . It is comprised of public and private sector members. The Council is led by the Executive Committee which oversees the Governor's Sterling Award for Performance Excellence and all Sterling process activities, including the annual Sterling conference.

Since 1992, 64 organizations have received the Governor's Sterling Award (GSA) for significant improvement and achievement of performance excellence. The GSA is derived from the internationally acclaimed Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and is based on the application of the Sterling Criteria. The Governor's Sterling Award is recognized as the preeminent state award process in the nation.

The Sterling Core Processes consist of several key components:
  • Sterling promotes organizational performance excellence through the offering of three assessment tools. The Governor's Sterling Award , Sterling Challenge , and Sterling Navigator provide organizations at all levels explicit feedback on systematically improving their management approaches. The Florida Sterling Council trains more than 200 Examiners annually to assist in this effort.
  • Sterling promotes the development of internal expertise in organizations by offering training sessions throughout the state, including Sterling Criteria, Balanced Scorecard, Knowledge Management, and Leadership Development. In addition, Sterling offers customized organizational training and mentoring.
  • The annual Sterling Conference promotes professional development, networking, and recognition for organizations seeking performance excellence. The conference attracts more than 1,100 professionals and executives from across the country. It boasts dynamic keynote speakers, 50 workshops, a Products & Services Exposition, The Governor's Sterling Award Banquet, and much more.
  • The Team showcase helps to facilitate the regional application of performance improvement principles and recognition across the six state regions.
