GOVERNOR BUSH AND LT. GOVERNOR JENNINGS ANNOUNCE
2006 GOVERNOR'S STERLING AWARD RECIPIENTS

~Florida Sterling Council to Honor Two Organizations~

TALLAHASSEE - Governor Jeb Bush, Lt. Governor Toni Jennings, and the Florida Sterling Council announced today two organizations will receive the Governor's Sterling Award. They will honor Miami-Dade County Health Department and Ramblewood Elementary School at the Governor's Sterling Award Banquet at the JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes on June 2, 2006.

"The Governor's Sterling Award recognizes this year's most prominent institutions," said Governor Bush. "Both of these organizations model the excellence and leadership necessary to drive higher performance throughout our great state and help maintain Florida's competitive edge."

For 14 years, the Governor's Sterling Award has recognized organizations and businesses in Florida that have successfully achieved performance superiority within their management and operations. Each winner has undergone an in-depth assessment and evaluation that included an expert team of examiners conducting an on-site review of the organizations' management systems and organizational performance results.

Miami-Dade County Health Department is a lead agency as part of the State of Florida Department of Health that provides core public health functions and essential services related to disease control and prevention, environmental health, and other health services for more than 2.4 million Miami-Dade County residents. The Miami-Dade Health Department's vision to be a world-class public health system is supported by three key strategic priorities: prevention and preparedness; return on investment; and service excellence. The strength of this organization is embedded in their leadership and relationship-building among community leaders in understanding and reacting to multiple priorities, constituents, and mandates. As one of the largest health departments (top ten percent) in the country, Miami-Dade County Health Department serves a very diverse and growing population where early detection and prevention of public health concerns is vital to protecting the health of its residents. This is the second time Miami-Dade County Health Department has been recognized as a Governor's Sterling Award Recipient, as the first award was earned in 2002.

Ramblewood Elementary School (Coral Springs) has a student population of more than 1,000, which includes a very diverse population of 52% Caucasian, 23% Hispanic, 17% African American, 3% Asian, and 5% Multi-Racial children. The school places an emphasis on reading as the framework for success, where reading is the foundation for the delivery of all educational programs, and every teacher is considered a reading teacher. The focus is that continuous improvement ultimately guarantees student achievement. The school has been successful in earning an "A" rating for the past 4 years as well as meeting No Child Left Behind standards for adequate yearly progress in learning for all subgroups of students. One of the school's key strengths is its team-based leadership system that gives teachers, support staff, parents and students what they need to succeed. This is the first school in Broward County to be a recipient of the Governor's Sterling Award.

Established in 1992, the Florida Sterling Council is a public/private not-for-profit corporation supported by the Executive Office of the Governor. Sterling's Annual Conference is exclusively designed to teach participants how to elevate performance and increase productivity. More than 1,200 executives and professionals gather at this event for a one-stop source for education, information, and inspiration. The conference concludes with the recognition of best practices, the Team Showcase Champion, and presentation of the Governor's Sterling Awards.
